Pantone Colour of 2018 – Ultra Violet

The trend predictors at Pantone have announced their prediction for the 2018 colour of the year and it is…
(drum roll please)
Pantone Ultra Violet

… Ultra Violet!  Pantone is calling it a “dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade” that “communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.”  A very bold and vibrant choice after what was known as nature’s neutral; 2017’s Greenery.

Ahead of the trend, Cheryl + Travis used shades of purple in their fall 2017 wedding.

Holly + Brett’s Wedding at The Commons

birch-and-bunny-weddings-and-events-2Holly + Brett are a truly unique couple, so their wedding had to stand out!  Laid back, sentimental, and so much fun, their wedding incorporated their personalities into every detail.  Find out what they swapped out instead of the traditional wedding cake, bouquet or guestbook!
Holly and Brett Wedding Bride and GroomInstead of a traditional bouquet, Holly opted for handmade fabric flowers on her couture dress and to drape everything in flowers and greenery from top to bottom.  Check out this pretty hanging greenery and ceremony vignette where Holly + Brett said their “I Do’s”

Fun details like this pair of vintage typewriters as a guestbook alternative, made Holly + Brett’s wedding so unique.  Holly collected these items and created the banners for the reception decor herself.

Chandelier Wedding Cakes

Chandelier wedding cakes seem to defy the laws of physics and gravity. Suspended cakes are a real show stopper that guests will never forget! Hanging decor has been growing steadily in popularity over the past few years, so I wanted to take a moment to appreciate these impressive works of art.
Chandelier Cake - Kaylee CuocoIf this isn’t glamour, I don’t know what is! The world was awe-struck when Kayley Cuoco had that gorgeous chandelier cake pictured above for her wedding to Ryan Sweeting.
Chandelier Cake - Kaley CuocoThese glamorous works of art are not just for celebrities though.   I recently spoke to Lynnette, of Calgary’s own Swirl Cakes & Cupcakes about her Chandelier Cake creations.

Lynette, what is the secret to creating these gravity defying, upside down hanging cakes?
The secret is finding a cake designer who know the principles of engineering cakes and how tiered cakes are put together. Once these principles are mastered, anything is possible- including defying gravity!

Swirl Cakes

What are some things that a couple should keep in mind when selecting a cake company?
First is finding a company who is licensed. It is so important to hire someone who is certified in food safety and is inspected to ensure proper food handling is performed for the safety of you and your guest.

Next is find someone who matches your style and can create what you have envisioned. It’s also important to find a designer who bakes from scratch- this provides a better product and more flexibility in flavors and varying flavor profiles.

Finding a designer who has a good reputation and works with wedding planners can be helpful as well. Planners are exposed to a wide variety of artists and they have done the work for you to provide an approved vendors list who offer experience product and great customer service. We are proud to work with our wedding colleagues since we all have the same goal in mind- providing our clients with the wedding they desire.

What inspired you to get into the wedding industry?
We’ve been in business for just over six years and I’ve personally been designing for over 16 years now. Our company grew out of demand- it started as a hobby and then soon people who I didn’t even know where contacting me thru word of mouth to create something for them and a business was born.

What is your favorite thing about designing wedding cakes?
My favorite thing in designing a wedding cake is taking a couples vision of what they have and bringing it to life. There may be several styles or designs that they like and the challenge is to create those into one cake for them to reflect each element.

Once we’ve create the cake, we get excited thinking about how many guests get to enjoy a pastry sensation that looks beautiful and tastes great.

What is your favorite cake flavor?
My personal favorite is corona cake with lime cream cheese icing. But chocolate with salted caramel buttercream and chocolate ganache is a close second.
Corona and Lime Cupcakes

Yum, those look delicious and that chocolate with salted caramel buttercream and chocolate ganache sounds incredible! A huge thank you to Swirl Cakes and Cupcakes!

What do you think, is there anything more glamorous or memorable than a chandelier cake?  Would you consider having one for your wedding?

2016 Wedding Trend Forecast

Don’t be afraid to set your own trends, and add your own personal spin on them.  Here are a few to watch for this year!

1)  Loose, Unstructured Florals
In 2015 we saw a move toward more organic looking, natural floral arrangements that give the impression of a bride just having gathered her bouquet from her garden on her way to the ceremony.  No more perfectly round bouquets, the modern bride prefers a less fussy look.  My guess is that we will continue to see more of this more free flowing look in 2016.
Edited: Just added this gorgeous bridal bouquet by Carla Lily Flowers.

2) Wedding Cake Alternatives
Cupcakes and cake pops have been paving the way in recent years for unlimited options for wedding cake alternatives.  This year’s biggest dessert will be the merengue- according to Suzanne of Handmade Cake Co. we can expect to see more in the form of macarons of course, but also meringue pavlova, nests, and more!  Well, I’ve tasted her merengues and they are to die for!!

Also consider a delightful selection of pies, even individual hand-pies, or a display of old fashioned donuts, cookie + ice cream sandwiches, ice cream sundae bar.

3) Suspended Centrepieces and Chandelier Cakes
Hello WOW Factor!  These gravity defying centerpieces and hanging cakes are such a memorable way to add drama to your reception!

Edited: Check out this gorgeous suspended floral piece that hung above a Cake-Tasting Bar by local shop Handmade Cake Co. at a recent wedding show. Florals by Fleurish Flower Shop. LOVE IT!

4) Food Stations
Expected to be a big hit again this year, couples are breaking out with fun, new ideas for food stations.  Some are opting to go with a formal sit-down dinner with stations for cocktail hour, desert and late night snack.  Others still are skipping the sit-down dinner entirely and instead letting guests mingle between exciting action-stations where each item is prepared before guests’ eyes!  Just make sure to have plenty of casual seating and soft seating available for those who wish to gather at a table between stations.

5) Bold Dresses
This year we are going to see many Brides opt for bold statements with their gown.  Plunging necklines, or low backs, short dresses with long sleeves, asymmetric necklines, two-piece with a crop-top, and our very favorite dress trend this year: illusion necklines with lace or floral appliques.  So feminine and pretty!

6) Metallics
An elegant pop of sparkle, metallics are being incorporated in everything from foil stamped invitations to jewelry to decor elements and even dresses!  Silver, Gold, Bronze, are trending, but Rose Gold and Copper are already quickly becoming the most requested metallics.

Pantone Colour of 2015 – Marsala

Marsala Macarons

Marsala has been announced as Pantone’s prediction for the colour of the year for 2015.  Compared to last year’s color Radiant Orchid, this year’s colour is a much more rich hue.  It’s deeper and pairs well with metallics.  **Just between us darling, that’s a little clue as to a certain wedding inspiration styled shoot that I may have in the works!
Marsala Pantone Color of the Year 2015Bride's Manicure
“This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty.” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone Color Institute.

Will you be incorporating this rich wine hue into your wedding colour pallet?  We’d love to hear from you!
