There are not enough words to express how much I enjoyed my time with this couple for their Bow Valley Ranche wedding. Getting to know them over this past year has been a lot of fun, and I’m glad they found me because I now call them friends. I’m even more glad that these two wonderful souls have found each other!

If you’re wondering if you should have first look photos, the answer is YES. It’s the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time together on what is inevitably a busy day. It gives you a moment to enjoy each other before that iconic walk down the aisle.

From the moment she texted dress shopping photos, I might have been kinda obsessed about Hilary’s dress. I mean, just look at her! Plus, when a Bride tells you how important it is that she can really bust a move in her gown, you know you’re in for a fun time.

Their ceremony was held in front of the gorgeous historic home, facing the artisan gardens. Surrounded by the evergreens of Fish Creek Park, it truly is a magnificent location. After some newlywed and bridal party portraits, the two joined guests for cocktail hour in the back yard.

Instead of the traditional clinking of the glasses, this duo had another game in mind. Their reception kissing game would involve options like a nutrition themed spelling bee or feats of strength, including arm wrestling the Bride! Hands down, this was the most exciting kissing game I’ve seen. With heartfelt speeches, a menu of local faire and much laughter this was one FUN reception!

While guests were enjoying their cake, that’s when we had scheduled a dusk photo session for a few private moments alone together. Following the First Dance, we saw an energetic rush to pack the dance floor and it remained packed (and bumpin’) until the last note, of the last song of the night.

Congratulations to these two lovelies, and many thanks to all the wonderful event partners who made it happen. Leave H+D some love in the comments below!

Nigerian Jewish Wedding

The multi-day wedding weekend joined Nigerian and Jewish traditions. Nigerian weddings are a colourful celebration joining two families.

Their multi-day celebration began with a Nigerian Wedding Ceremony which focused on joining the two families together. Families matched in their double-outfits in the same colours and patterns. All traditional Nigerian attire was hand-sewn in rich coloured fabrics.  These gorgeous, vibrant garments were hand sewn by the Mother of the Groom.

To share their beautiful culture with me, they even gifted me a beautiful traditional Nigerian beaded necklace which I just adore.  My heart was so full after this weekend.

Rich cultural practices make up Nigerian Wedding ceremonies, with each area having its own traditions. The family selects one member to represent them called an Olopa, in this case, the Father-of-the-Groom.  The couple’s parents and siblings are seated in a semi-circle around a table.  Hand-carved wooden bowls containing symbolic foods are passed around for each person to taste.

As he began the ceremony, he spoke about love, and family, and the history of these traditions. The Groom’s father explained the symbolism behind the foods.  Since fish do not drown in water, tasting smoked fish symbolizes that you will not drown in the trials of life.  It is said that no one eats salt and speaks badly of it.  Tasting  honey for sweetness of life.  Symbolizes that the couple will remain united for better or worse.

The most significant symbolism belongs to the Kola nut, which grows in a pod from a large plant in the tropical rain forests of Africa.  This caffeinated nut is the namesake of the soft drink, as it was an original ingredient used for flavoring cola.  Much symbolism is attached to the kola nut including; good fortune, hospitality, friendship, respect, peace, life, and blessings for a successful marriage.

The night was filled with touching speeches, celebration, and the merging of two families, two cultures. What a wonderful way to begin this multi-day Nigerian and Jewish wedding weekend!

We love being involved in all different types of events and celebrations, and would be honoured to be a part of yours. Get in touch with our team!

Linsey + Mitch were surrounded by the scenic rocky mountains at their Silvertip Resort Wedding in Canmore, Alberta.  Knowing that his love was a major Disney fanatic, Mitch proposed to Linsey at Disney Land!

As guests arrived they were serenaded by Amante Duo.

To incorporate their Disney Land proposal into their big day wasn’t hard, first they used Disney trivia to determine the order at dinner.  Then instead of clinking glasses guests were to recite a Disney quote to get the newlyweds to smooch.

A hand-painted mountainscape two-tier wedding cake drew gasps as we brought guests in to the reception. Of course we didn’t get a chance to snap a photo of it later once more florals were added, once the ceremony concluded. It was even more beautiful once more florals were added.

This sweets table featured desserts as far as the eye could see; everything from macarons and profiteroles, to sandwich cookies, donuts, brownies, blondies, and various mini pies and tartlets!

One small guest was especially impressed by the sweets table!  I overheard the little girl ask her daddy if she could go get her dessert. He agreed, but her eyes must have been bigger than her stomach because she returned with a half full serving platter!  After we stifled our giggles, (after all, there was no shortage of sweets) her dad told the little girl that she had to offer the desserts around her table.  Boy was she ever disappointed, but she did share the platter.  Such a sweetheart.

One of Linsey + Mitch’s friends is a dance choreographer, so she taught their friends and family dance lessons. They rehearsed and staged a surprise Flash-mob group dance!

Afterwards, I took the gorgeous flowers to YYC Petal Project.  They took our donated centerpieces, bouquets and garlands and split them into several smaller bouquets which they distributed to a Senior’s Care Center.  As a Nurse (and a total sweetheart) Linsey was so thrilled by this suggestion.

What an amazing day with an incredible couple!  We are so honored that you chose us to be a part of your special day.

arch flowers at Glenmore Sailing ClubOverlooking the water on a gorgeous day in August,  Amy + Paul wed among loved ones at the Glenmore Sailing Club.

The intimate event blended urban style with bohemian charm, and a minimal aesthetic set the tone for their special day.  Decor plays an important role in any event, but that is especially true when your Bride is an Interior Designer!

The reception was brought to life with lush florals and leafy greenery beautiful, from their gem embellished place cards to their first dance at twilight below the strings of bulb lights.  In the timeline we added a special time for Amy + Paul to sneak off for a sunset photo session.

Charly and Mario had a beautiful modern, Mission wedding. You can tell that they are totally in love with each other, and that their neighborhood holds a special place in their hearts. Mission is a vibrant inner city community with beautiful parks, cute little boutiques and exciting restaurants and bars. It was in one such hot spot where we had their wedding; Wurst. If you’ve never been, Wurst is a Bavarian restaurant and beer hall… AKA uberkitchen and wunderbar, located in the legendary old Franzl’s Gasthaus building on 4th Street in Mission.

Charly and Mario had 14 attendants in their Bridal Party, seven (7) each, many traveling to be present. As you can imagine, there was quite a lot of activity while getting ready in the morning – quite a lot of fun! The ladies began with mimosas in matching floral print jammies.

Once everyone was looking dapper and gorgeous, it was time for a first look photo session. Mario’s expression when he saw his stunning Bride really melts our hearts.

Side note: Along with the professional images that were shared with me (by the Photographer who happens to be a good friend of the Bride!) I also want to show you some behind the scenes shots that I snapped of the decor elements. I think adding them will help round out the full vibe of this event, so please don’t mind the fact that my cell phone snaps aren’t as nice and aren’t edited to match the dark and moody professional ones.

Can you believe this gorgeous ceremony under patio string lights was our Rain Back Up plan?! There was also a much more intimate feeling with loved ones gathered so closely for the ceremony. Even if the Plan A outdoor location would have been beautiful too, they were so happy and we agree that it turned out just beautifully.

While Charly and Mario and their lovely attendants went with their photographer for formals in a nearby park, our team ‘flipped’ the patio from ceremony space to lounge area. We brought in cocktail tables and decorated them with pretty linens, floral arrangements. Then to make the fire pit more cozy and inviting, we added cushions and baskets of warm blankets. (Of course in the hustle and bustle of the moment we didn’t happen to take any #bts photos but hopefully we’re painting you a mental picture.) 😉

Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres inside at the bar, and snapped polaroids with a giant LOVE ball prop and of course wrote well wishes in the guestbook.

Charly and Mario, your wedding was beautiful! I was just overwhelmed with the love that was felt both between you two and with your guests who clearly adore you. Thank you for choosing us to be a part of it all. Our team had so much fun executing your modern Mission wedding, and working with Wurst and our amazing group of vendors. Wishing you a lifetime of happiness!

In an intimate twilight ceremony in the heart of Banff National Park, Vanessa and PJ renewed their vows.  The two expressed their ongoing love for one another after over a decade of marriage. They did so, in the presence of their two beautiful children, their parents and a few close friends.

Intimate Ceremony

Vanessa and PJ returned from their honeymoon to discover that sadly their wedding photographer had shut down and left town with the film.  Their lone framed photo of their wedding day was snapped by a friend. After their Banff Vow Renewal ceremony, Vanessa and PJ have made some new memories. This time, the lovely Jennie Guenard has captured these beautiful images for them.

The inspiration behind everything from Vanessa’s stunning Elizabeth Dye gown to the watercolour vow renewal booklets and even their cake was inspired by the pretty colours in their mountain backdrop and the way it looked like a watercolour painting at twilight.  I hope you all love these photos as much as we do!

Tamara of Bake My Day created this gorgeous mountain cutting cake. The mountains match Vanessa + PJ’s blue and grey colour scheme and watercolour theme. Yes, she made that beautiful flower too and it’s edible!

Isn’t Vanessa breathtaking?  (and how about that gown?!)  Vanessa wore the Elizabeth Dye Halo Gown in glacier and ivory.

What an incredible honor it was to be a part of planning your special day Vanessa and PJ. Your Vow Renewal ceremony was so beautiful, and your family is lovely!  We’re so happy that you now have some photographs to hang on your walls.  Yours is a love for the ages!

Wedding at The Commons

Holly + Brett are a truly unique couple, so their wedding at The Commons had to stand out!  Exposed brick and pipes made this the perfect statement venue. Laid back, sentimental, and so much fun, their wedding incorporated their personalities into every detail.  Find out what they swapped out instead of the traditional wedding cake, bouquet or guestbook!

Fun details like this pair of vintage typewriters as a guestbook alternative, made Holly + Brett’s wedding so unique.

Wedding at The Commons Calgary

Carefully selected vintage pieces create a warm and inviting lounge area instead of having a typical signing table for their marriage document. We later added a few pieces to make it the ideal hangout when dancers needed a break.

In place of a bouquet, Holly opted for handmade fabric flowers on her couture dress.

For their “I Do’s” they went with this pretty hanging greenery installation and vignette of vintage crates and candles instead of a traditional arch. Greenery garlands on string lights draped from the ceiling rafters, among exposed pipes. Their ceremony was both intimate, and personal.

Leading up to the big day, Brett worked hard on his 1960 Chevy Bel Air so that he could drive his Bride Holly away in it after the ceremony. During Cocktail Hour, Brett and several of the couples’ friends and family showcased their classic cars.

No traditional wedding cake here, Holly + Brett opted for a vintage popsicle cart from Family Freezed. The popsicle sticks were even personalized with their names and wedding date!

To keep guests going through the night, Holly + Brett brought in a Food Truck for late night snack. You can never go wrong with pizza. Especially when it’s your wedding at The Commons and pizza from an Inglewood hot spot.

I had so much fun, with you guys!  It was a true pleasure to be involved in your wedding and to work with the following amazing team!

Kelsie and Jordan celebrated with loved ones at their Sirocco Wedding. They shared their love of travel and adventure by incorporating carefully chosen travel themed details.

The get-away golf cart whisked the newlyweds away for photos, dragging these adorable tin cans behind.

Just Married Tin Cans

Meanwhile, our team had a golf cart of our own which I used to shuttle Grandparents and elderly neighbors up to the club house for cocktail hour. (Having our own golf cart is just so handy to zip over to the ceremony site and back, so it’s one of our fave things about working at golf courses such as this Sirocco Wedding).

Meanwhile back at cocktail hour, guests were entertained by a highland dance troop.  Choreographed by their teacher who was none other than the Bride herself! If you want to see a clip of the dance, here is a link to Cinderwood Films’ video of Kelsie and Jordan’s wedding day.

Scottish Dancers

Each table was named after one of the trips Kelsie and Jordan had taken together over the years. Table runners with photos printed on them were a sweet way to share those wonderful trip memories with guests. Watercolour graphics of each location adorned the seating chart and corresponding table sign. Place cards tucked inside clear luggage tags were the perfect touch, along side favors of tea and honey bags.

The cake table featured 5 unique wedding cakes made by Alison LaFrance with Whippt Desserts & Catering. With delicious passion fruit flavor inside, each cake was delicious and more beautiful than the last!

While guests enjoyed their choice of those lovely cakes, we had scheduled a few private moments for romantic photos at sunset.

Congratulations once again, to Kelsie + Jordan!  Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your special day. It was such a joy to work with the two of you as well as the incredibly talented team for travel themed wedding.
